Collingwood Neighbourhood House (CNH) is a not-for-profit Society serving the Renfrew-Collingwood (RC) neighbourhood of East Vancouver. CNH’s mandate is to promote the well-being of the Renfrew-Collingwood community by providing leadership and working collaboratively with individuals, families, agencies and other groups to develop and support inclusive, innovative, sustainable initiatives and services that respond to the community’s social, educational, economic, health, cultural and recreational needs.
The Summer Accounting Support staff is a team of the Finance Department at CNH. This department acts as the financial backbone of an organization, promoting core values centered on accuracy, ethical behavior, and structural integrity. This admin-related role helps manage the company’s financial transactions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and some financial reporting to ensure accuracy, compliance, and cash flow management. It assists in recording revenues and expenses, processing payroll, and provides data for strategic decisions.
Program Overview
The Summer Accounting Support Staff is responsible for supporting the day-to-day operations of the Finance Team by performing accounting & administrative tasks. The Summer Accounting Support Staff is responsible for data entry, preparation of payments, coding incoming cheques, filing, cheque distribution, A/R and A/P processing, preparing bank deposits and providing support to the Accounting Coordinator or designate. There may be various accounting related projects from time to time as well. The Summer Accounting Support Staff must comply with the established financial policies and procedures. Additionally, the Summer Accounting Support Staff is expected to handle sensitive financial information confidentially and ensure smooth operation by accurately completing accounting & administrative tasks in a timely manner.
Responsibilities
- Entering assigned data into the accounting system on a timely and accurate basis
- Processing of A/R and A/P
- In conjunction with the Accounting Coordinator or designate, preparation of bank deposits
- Month-end closing of cash advances and petty cash
- Preparing department photocopies for each month
- Preparation of charitable tax receipts and thank you letters
- Assisting with reversing/voiding cheques
- Printing of general ledger listing
- Preparing all vendor payments in a timely and accurate manner
- Ensure the accuracy of coding for all entries as required
- Entering receipts on a timely and accurate basis
- Responding to inquiries concerning data or records managed by the accounting department
- Filing all accounting information in a timely and accurate manner
- Any other duties as delegated by the Accounting Coordinator or designate
Administrative & Internal Tasks
- Attend weekly team meetings and monthly Finance/HR department meetings
- Keep up-to-date records and proper filing of files
- Support the structure, organization, and administration of finance
- Perform other tasks as assigned
Eligibility Criteria by the Funder
- Applicant must be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment
- Applicant must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment international students are not eligible participants
- Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada
- Criminal Record Check (CRC) must be completed prior to the start of employment
Qualifications
- Secondary or post-secondary education with an interest in finance, administration, payroll
- A minimum of 2-3 years previous working experience in an accounting position
- Strong English communication skills, both written and oral
- Ability to multi-task in a complex and fast-paced situation
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, with a proactive attitude
- Familiarity with Outlook, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word and Microsoft Powerpoint
- Computer skills to navigate our Sage 300 accounting system and e-filing system
- Working knowledge of computerized accounting system and spreadsheets
- Minimum typing speed of at least 60 w.p.m. and ability to use a calculator
- Good interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
- Strong, organizational and problem solving skills
- Ability to work under pressure in a high paced environment and to meet strict deadlines

- Excellent organization, planning and detail-oriented skills
- Highly motivated with a strong work ethic and critical thinking skills
- Basic administrative skills (scanning, faxing, linking documents)
Assets
- Diploma or Certificate in Accounting is an asset
- Previous Non-Profit Experience an asset
Job Details
- Salary: $18.25/hr
- Schedule: 30 hours/week. The schedule is Monday to Thursday, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm.
