The Demonstration Roof Top Garden

The inspiration for a rooftop garden on the second floor of the Collingwood Neighbourhood House came from a team of individuals who saw the importance of developing community responses to developing a more sustainable food system.

The rooftop garden is newly developed and has a lot of potential to become a catalyst for neighbourhood networking, build relationships and coordinate community resources.

The design of the rooftop garden includes innovative food growing raised beds with an inlay of tile mosaics, a workshop area, living walls comprised of edible flowers and herbs, espalier apple trees, a worm compost area and a sedum green roof demonstration area.

One of the goals of the garden is to teach people how to engage in food growing in small spaces such as patios, balconies and roof tops. Visit our blog for an update of workshops related to small space gardening.

We are very appreciative of those who have funded the development of the garden including Vancouver Parks and Recreation, the Vancouver Foundation, the United Way, the UBC Chapman Student Learning Grant, Vancity Credit Union, the Real Estate Foundation, the Vancouver Film Studios, the Engle Family Foundation and the City of Vancouver.
