Renfrew-Collingwood Drug and Alcohol Committee
The
Renfrew Collingwood Drug and Alcohol Committee is a group of local residents
and service providers that meets once a month to discuss matters and plan
actions related to the promotion of a safe and healthy neighbourhood.
Formed as the result of community consultations in 1999, the group has been primarily involved in prevention education, especially among youth, in the areas of problematical substance use and sexual exploitation. It is the sponsor committee for the highly successful “I Can Choose We Can Choose” peer education program that operates among the Windermere family of schools. In 2001 the group signed the first neighbourhood agreement between a local citizens group and the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority, a document that describes how the two organizations will work together on projects that are designed to support initiatives that fall within the Four Pillars approach (harm reduction, treatment, prevention and enforcement) to problematic substance use in the Lower Mainland. Residents of Renfrew Collingwood are welcome to join the group at its regular meeting at Collingwood Neighbourhood House. The meetings are structured informally so as to give all participants the opportunity to discuss issues that are of concern to them. All meetings are on Mondays from 6 - 8 PM and dinner (payment by donation) is provided. The tentative meeting schedule for 2004 is as follows: Mondays: January 12, February 2, March 1, April 5, May 3, June 7, July 5, September 6, October 4, November 1, December 6
