A Made-in-Renfrew-Collingwood plan for the amenities we want to see locally.

RC Social & Cultural Plan

What social and cultural amenities are required in Renfrew-Collingwood and what needs to be done to ensure they are brought to the neighbourhood? CNH and a group of local residents, businesses and service providers have been working on this issue for many years. After extensive consultations with local artists and residents, over a twenty year period, they have prepared a plan to encourage the development of arts and culture infrastructure in Renfrew-Collingwood.

The goal of the arts and culture infrastructure plan is to benefit both local artists and non-artists and to make Renfrew-Collingwood a better place to live for everyone. The group that prepared the plan tried to take into account the area’s assets, including what makes it unique, as well as what it lacks and needs.

The following recommendations come from a long process of community and stakeholder consultation:

• Create a collaborative hub that combines studio space for local artists with studio and living space for visiting artists.
• Create a flexible, 230 seat performance venue.
• Create a local makerspace.
• Modify RS-1 zoning to permit artist-maker studios in place of parking garages.
• Modify selected CD-1 zones to permit an FSR of 3 for artist live-work spaces.
• Provide a number of new support systems to address such issues as stable funding, mentoring and arts marketing.
• Create a Renfrew-Collingwood cultural development council to help move the recommendations toward implementation.
